“I am NOT a fuggin’ MULE, victim, or lab experiment!”

The other day, I realized that I am sick and tired of being sick and tired. What am I sick of? Us. What am I tired of? Us.

By “us” I mean this collective sense of woe is me/the sky is falling. I found myself thoroughly irritated when a friend of mine posted a link to the latest “black women marriage crisis” article. I won’t link or name it because, really…does the title or content matter? It’s the same thing that surfaces every 2-3 months. When she linked it, she described it as depressing. I promptly responded “Stop reading that crap”.

Normally, I let those articles and subsequent twitter forums, radio discussions, multiple blog entries from “different perspectives”, etc. roll off my back. But for some reason, this latest thing just clung to me like film of dirty sweat. I guess the main thing that I can’t shake is the fact that people don’t understand that the promotion of this garbage is mainly due to our fascination with discussing it. Why would the media cease to produce this crap when we continue to digest it like a Happy Meal?

Funny thing is that our marriage/relationship/community “burden” isn’t anything more discouraging than what’s been happening in caucasian, asian and hispanic communities. Y’all do realize that they have had books and articles dedicated to their “crisis” as well, right? We and by we I mean Y’ALL  just tend to love to sound off incessantly whenever the latest sensationalized article posts, which leads to blog hits, radio listener call-ins, television ratings, magazine and book purchases…you get my drift.

I didn’t write this just to rant. Naw, my mama didn’t raise me like that. In fact, whenever I became sick and tired of being sick and tired of something, Mama SoJo would focus her Ruby Dee/Clair Huxtable hybrid eyes on me and say, “So what are YOU going to do differently?”

Well…I organized a group of like-minded individuals and we’re currently planning to systematically exterminate all of the perpetrators of this shit …created another Tumblr…mainly for myself but if you guys ever get tired of the same old, same old you can visit it too. It’s kind of a spinoff of my “Black Is BEautiful” post – dedicated to all of the things about our culture that RAWK. There will be pictures, quotes, music, videos, links (of substance – not sensationalism) etc. Bookmark it, add it, follow it, share it, +1 it…whatever you normally do…but please internalize it before you internalize the garbage. Basically, a Vision Board for the way our community REALLY looks, as opposed to what we’re being fed.  If you find positive things to add to it or want to share some of the awesomeness that you’re experiencing, by all means send it to me! In the meantime, Check it out!
